This year, Black History Month will focus on a poem by Langston Hughes, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” which uses four rivers to symbolize different eras in the history of African Americans. Through a series of six lessons, the students will consider the historical significance of each river mentioned in the poem: the Euphrates, the Congo, the Nile, and the Mississippi. The goal is that as students study literature, science, geography, history, and the Bible, they will appreciate God’s sovereign hand over the creation of all people, His love of diversity, and the unique, difficult, and inspiring experience of the African American people.

In an effort to compliment Langston Hughes’ poem, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”, the Black History Committee created an African/Black History Timeline. The timeline will be displayed outside of the school cafeteria for the month of February.
